Thanksgiving Drive for SIC

Lakewood First United Methodist Church

The "Success in Challenges" program is a grass-roots social service agency that serves the greater Long Beach Community, and it is headed up by our very own Rev. Leon and Paula Woods.  Their mission is to provide community youth and adults with safe, interactive programs that promote good citizenship, character development, creativity and discipline, designed to inspire them to face life’s challenges with enthusiasm and dignity.  They also run a tutoring program that serves 60-75 students per day which and helps students with their academic studies.

This year, as an outreach to this community, “Success in Challenges,” with the support of the Broken Loaf Food Pantry, Los Altos United Methodist Church, and Lakewood First United Methodist Church, will be hosting a Thanksgiving dinner on November 17th for students in their mentoring program, and they will provide 75 bags filled with Thanksgiving groceries for each child to take home so that they can share a holiday meal with their family.

In preparation for this event, we are launching a food drive.  Between now and November 13, Please bring the following items and leave them at the Narthex of Lakewood First UMC:

Cake Mix

Boxed stuffing/dressing

Cake frosting

Cranberry sauce

Cereal

Gravy

Canned tuna

Box of sugar

Canned yams

Bag of flour

Black eyed peas

Canned soups

Sack of potatoes

Rice

Volunteers will also be needed to bag the items on November 16th and to help serve the meal on November 17th.  If you would like to serve in either of these capacities, please contact Gary Fox.

Please help us make this new event the beginning of a successful and memorable Holiday tradition.
